Strategic Facilities and Real Estate Planning

Often referred to simply as “Strategic Facilities Planning” (SFP), this is a set of services originally developed by George Heery for the General Electric Corporation in 1982. SFP is an extension of a company’s business plan or an institution’s institutional plan.

The SFP deals with the business or institutional aspects of the Owner’s facilities and real estate and is often heavily driven by need justification as well as financial and funding issues. SFP is not master planning nor facility requirements programming, though it often uses some programming techniques along with financial planning and real estate analysis studies. Generally, SFP efforts, when undertaken, would precede master planning.

Two downloadable publications on SFP are available on this website, “Strategic Facilities Planning”, and “Strategic Facilities Planning for Colleges and Universities”.
